 A Guide to Role-Playing

Sometimes, in all the clamor, we kind of lose the point of Role-playing.
If you're a newbie, or someone who wants to refresh their memory, here is a guide to role-playing...

I- Get to know your character
Really get into it. This is why we make you do the long and boring plot and history outlines for your character. If your character is nice and patient, but you are not, your character has to remain nice and patient, because that is why it is called "Role-Playing"- you have to act out a role. Sort of like an unscripted online play. Remember- it's important to stay in-character!

II- Posting In Character
- When you post in a Role Play thread, you should post as your character, and not yourself. ((unless in double parentheses like this))

- Never post twice in a row unless in Off Topic.. You must wait for at least another character to respond before posting again.

- You should always post in the 3rd person as if you were writing a book. Never in first person, don’t confuse yourself with your character. Example:

Dawn walked into her Room.

Rather than

I walked into my room.

- When posting, please use prose format. This means that instead of posting your actions between *’s or ::’s, you’ll post as you would see in a book. Example:

Dawn walked into her room in a rage. The stray cat who had been living in the neighborhood, Mr. Squiggles, as Dawn called him, had died and Dawn was distraught.

It's just nicer if you do the book type action.

- When talking to someone, be sure you make it clear who you are talking to, and put the statement in quotes (“and”) Example:

Dawn heard a scuffle, "Buffy, is that you?"

If you put in the name of who you're speaking to, it'll be easier for others to understand what you're doing.

- Thoughts should always be in italics. [*I]Thought goes here[/*I], (take out the *) this makes it easier to tell the difference between “Speech” and Thoughts so people know what they should and should not respond to.

Dawn thought, Hey, Buffy's busy tonight, that couldn't be her...

or

Dawn thought, Hey, Buffy's busy tonight, that couldn't be her...

III-God Modding
... IS BAAAAAAD!! This is when you post another person's action, when you don't play that character. For Instance, what you shouldn't do:

Dawn went outside her room to check who it was and it was Anya, who then came upstairs and said, "Hi Dawn!"

Example of proper method:

Dawn went outside her room and wondered who was there.

And wait for a reply, then you can write your reaction to his or her move. If Anya does come in and says hi, then you can respond.

Character Expansion

IV-The Five Questions for a good post
- Who are you? Who else is around you? Describe yourself a bit, and remember that you should show how charming you are rather than saying you’re charming.

- What are you doing? Are you wandering around? Are you talking to someone?

- Why are you entering the thread? Obviously you’re there for a reason, so explain it.

- Where are you? Use the items around you to your advantage. If you’re on the front lawns, interact with the trees, if you’re in a classroom, sit at a desk. If you don’t play the where, your post will be boring.

- How do you feel? Are you angry, happy, sad, upset, cheerful, or something else entirely. Adding emotion will help to ‘humanize’ your character and make them more real.

V-Be Patient
Sometimes it'll take days for people to respond. We have members from all over the globe, and that means they're in different timezones. Don't get impatient after 5 minutes and decide that they don't like you, this is a message board, not a chatroom. If you wait, you'll discover that it's worth it.

VI-Common Courtesies
You wouldn’t like it very much if someone you’d never met before walked up and punched you, right? Well, remember not to do that to someone else. Don’t interrupt a sequence going between two characters without a good reason, unless it’s quite obvious that they need someone else to talk to.

Don’t say that you’ve done things with others that you haven’t done, and never post as another character, or actions for anyone else. Whether you have permission from the member or not.

So, by now, if you're not sure about anything, give me a PM and I'll teach you myself... Oh, and by the way, I copied most of this, then modified the words... I just think their guide was really good, and that most of the things were good here, as well... except Spam. I love Spam.
